The HKBU Musketeers Foundation Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute for Age-related Diseases (MFRI) was established on July 2, 2026 at the School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University, with the generous support of a HK$30 million donation from the Musketeers Education and Culture Charitable Foundation.
Under the leadership of Prof. Min Li, the mission and objective of MFRI are:
To position Hong Kong as a preeminent international hub for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) development through collaborative research, rigorous clinical trials, and translational innovation, fostering breakthroughs that will benefit not only the region but also the global community.
To advance the scientific understanding and clinical application of TCM in the management of age-related diseases including neuropsychiatric & neurodegenerative diseases, obesity & diabetes, and osteoarthritis.
The aging population faces a significant burden from various diseases, particularly neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, obesity and diabetes, and degenerative bone diseases. These conditions not only compromise the quality of life but also impose substantial economic costs on healthcare systems and families.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a holistic approach to managing these diseases, focusing on the integration of body and mind. TCM modalities, such as herbal medicine, and dietary therapy, have demonstrated efficacy in alleviating symptoms and improving overall health.
To further explore the potential of TCM in addressing these prevalent diseases, we are conducting a series of epidemiological studies, including cross-sectional and interventional studies utilizing Chinese herbal formulas. These studies will help assess the effectiveness of TCM interventions and their impact on health outcomes in older adults. Additionally, we are conducting basic science research to identify novel therapeutic targets and approaches within the TCM framework. By integrating TCM into the management strategies for these diseases, we can potentially reduce the healthcare burden on older adults, enhance their quality of life, and contribute to healthier aging. This research institute aims to provide a comprehensive framework for improving health outcomes in the elderly population through the exploration of TCM methodologies and scientific inquiry.
We welcome collaboration with institutions and researchers worldwide as we work together toward these important goals.
